SCAN Appoints Aman Bhandari as First Chief AI Officer to Lead Enterprise AI Strategy

Before joining SCAN, Bhandari served as Vice President of Data Science at Vertex Pharmaceuticals.

SCAN Group has appointed Aman Bhandari, Ph.D., as its first Chief AI Officer, marking a step toward expanding its artificial intelligence capabilities across the organization.

Bhandari will lead SCAN’s enterprise AI and data analytics strategy, with a focus on scaling AI deployments across its operational and care delivery functions. The role is designed to integrate AI into day-to-day workflows and improve efficiency across teams.

Before joining SCAN, Bhandari served as Vice President of Data Science at Vertex Pharmaceuticals. He also played a role in building the first data science team at Merck and has experience working with the White House and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services on data and AI initiatives.

At SCAN, the AI function will report to Lindsay Crawley Herbert, Chief People and Transformation Officer. The structure places AI within a broader organizational context focused on workforce adoption and operational integration, rather than as a standalone technology function.

The company has already introduced several AI-driven tools, including call summarization and interactive voice response systems for member support, as well as platforms that assist in summarizing medical charts during care transitions.

SCAN CEO Sachin Jain said the appointment aligns with the organization’s focus on building scalable infrastructure following recent growth. The company expanded its membership during the latest Medicare enrollment cycle and is now prioritizing systems that can support long-term operational scale.

Jain noted that the role will focus on aligning AI initiatives across the organization, moving beyond isolated deployments toward a coordinated approach. Bhandari’s experience in building AI systems across sectors is expected to support this effort.

Bhandari said his experience across life sciences and public sector roles influenced his move into the insurance space, with a focus on applying AI to broader healthcare delivery challenges. He added that the organization will prioritize measurable outcomes as it expands its AI use cases.
