The agreement aims to support stronger engagement with ministries of health and international partners to help integrate digital innovations into national health programs.

WHO SEARO and The George Institute for Global Health, India, have formalized a two-year collaboration to expand the role of digital health and AI in tackling non-communicable diseases and strengthening primary healthcare systems across South-East Asia.

The agreement seeks to support countries in designing, implementing, evaluating, and scaling evidence-based digital health interventions to improve access to care and health outcomes and runs from April 2026 to March 2028.

Through the collaboration, WHO SEARO and The George Institute will work on advancing implementation science for digital health programs focused on NCD prevention and treatment.

The initiative will also generate real-world evidence on the effectiveness, feasibility, scalability, cost-effectiveness, and equity impact of digital health solutions integrated into healthcare systems.

A key area of focus will be the development of frameworks, guidance documents, and practical tools to support AI-powered healthcare programs aligned with WHO’s broader digital health strategy.

The partners will also facilitate technical workshops, webinars, and collaborative learning opportunities for policymakers, researchers, and healthcare implementers working in digital health.

Beyond research and capacity building, the agreement aims to support stronger engagement with ministries of health and international partners to help integrate digital innovations into national health programs.

The collaboration will also contribute to the development of technical guidance and evaluation frameworks for the responsible deployment of AI in low- and middle-income countries.

Another important component of the partnership is supporting regional discussions on ethical AI governance, data privacy, and interoperability standards.

The George Institute for Global Health, India, established in 2007, is an independent health research organization with offices in New Delhi and Hyderabad and research activities spanning 21 states.

The institute has built a strong track record in generating evidence to inform health policy and practice, particularly in areas such as chronic disease prevention, health systems strengthening, and technology-enabled care.
