Mumbai’s KEM Hospital is set to pilot an AI-based system to support the early diagnosis and monitoring of brain disorders, including epilepsy and brain tumours.
The 12-month study will assess 150 patients and examine how AI can help doctors analyse complex neurological data and track changes in brain function after surgery.
The initiative is being planned by Mumbai’s civic body as part of its efforts to explore the use of AI in public healthcare.
The proposed project, developed by Bangalore-based startup BrainsightAI Technology, is estimated to cost around INR 4.99 Cr and will be presented before the Standing Committee for approval.
Under the pilot, AI will analyse data generated through MRI scans, CT scans, and electroencephalography (EEG).
The technology is expected to help doctors identify characteristics of brain tumours, flag suspicious areas, and locate the possible focal point of epilepsy, or the region of the brain where seizures may originate.
The project has also been designed to assess AI beyond its potential role in initial diagnosis. Patients undergoing surgery will be evaluated at one, three, and six months after the procedure, allowing doctors to study changes in brain function over time and determine whether AI can support post-operative neurological monitoring.
Neurological conditions can require doctors to interpret multiple types of clinical information, including medical imaging, electrical brain activity, and patient symptoms.
AI tools can process large volumes of such data and identify patterns that may require closer clinical attention, potentially supporting faster and more consistent assessments.
If the pilot delivers positive results, Mumbai’s civic body plans to expand the AI-based diagnostic facility to other civic-run hospitals.
The project could provide real-world evidence on whether AI can make brain disorder diagnosis and monitoring faster, more consistent, and scalable within India's public healthcare system.
