WellSpan Expands Partnership with General Catalyst’s HATCo to Advance AI in Healthcare

The expansion builds on a 2023 partnership that initially focused on staffing shortages and workforce wellbeing.

WellSpan Health has expanded its collaboration with General Catalyst’s Health Assurance Transformation Company (HATCo), becoming its first Transformation Partner in an initiative to modernize care delivery with artificial intelligence (AI).

The expansion builds on a 2023 partnership that initially focused on staffing shortages and workforce wellbeing. Since then, WellSpan has worked with General Catalyst portfolio companies, including Aidoc and Hippocratic AI, to bring AI-powered tools into clinical workflows.

"At WellSpan, we're driving transformation from the inside out, leveraging our team’s deep clinical expertise and proven innovation capabilities to reimagine how care is delivered,” said Roxanna Gapstur, Ph.D., R.N., president and CEO, WellSpan Health. She said the expanded effort moves beyond idea-sharing toward co-developing scalable solutions aligned with the system’s five-year strategy.

Focus Areas and Goals

The collaboration will target three priorities: workforce transformation, personalized care delivery, and financial sustainability. Administrative automation and advanced digital tools are expected to reclaim more than 400,000 clinical hours annually, enabling staff to spend more time with patients. The partners also aim for double-digit performance improvements within five years.

“WellSpan exemplifies the kind of forward-thinking health system partner we need to make health assurance a reality for all Americans,” said Hemant Taneja, CEO, General Catalyst. He emphasized that meaningful change requires shared risks and rewards, with technology and clinical expertise working in alignment.

Financial sustainability remains a central goal, with strategies designed to address reimbursement shifts and industry disruptions while safeguarding community service capacity.

"Our Transformation Partnership with WellSpan demonstrates how health systems and technology partners can work together to build the infrastructure for health assurance,” said Daryl Tol, president, HATCo. He noted the model could inform other systems looking to strengthen outcomes, manage costs, and support care teams.
