Unihealth Hospitals Scales Uganda Network with Entebbe Acquisition, Boosts Capacity to 150 Beds

UMC Hospital Entebbe is expected to serve as a critical extension of the Kampala hub, providing a wide range of services, including internal medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and diagnostic services.

Mumbai-based Unihealth Hospitals has expanded its footprint in Uganda by acquiring and commissioning UMC Hospital Entebbe, increasing its total capacity to 150 beds and enhancing access to integrated healthcare services across urban and peri-urban regions.

The expansion builds on Unihealth’s growing role as an integrated healthcare provider across India and East Africa. In Uganda, the company has been steadily developing a network anchored by UMC Victoria Hospital in Kampala, which serves as a referral centre for complex and high-acuity cases.

Positioned in a key catchment area, UMC Hospital Entebbe is expected to function as a critical extension of the Kampala hub. It will cater to a wide range of services, including internal medicine, general surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, orthopaedics, trauma care, chronic disease management, and diagnostic services.

The facility is expected to support outpatient consultations, inpatient care, and day procedures, contributing to faster patient turnaround and more efficient care pathways.

The development reinforces Unihealth’s hub-and-spoke model, where specialized interventions are centralized while routine and mid-level care are delivered closer to communities. This approach is designed to optimize the use of medical expertise and infrastructure, enable smoother referrals between facilities, and reduce congestion at tertiary centres.

By distributing patient load more effectively, the model also aims to improve clinical outcomes and patient experience.

From a business perspective, the expansion is expected to support higher patient volumes and occupancy rates while improving the case mix through increased specialized procedures.

Operational efficiencies are likely to be driven by shared services, better asset utilization, and improved clinician productivity, contributing to margin expansion over time.
