Tamil Nadu’s Madurai District Set for INR 806.9 Cr Healthcare Upgrade, Says Health Minister

Tamil Nadu’s Madurai district is set to receive healthcare projects with a combined value of INR 806.9 crore, according to Health and Family Welfare Minister K.G. Arunraj.

Among the key projects, a Regional Cancer Centre has been sanctioned d for Madurai at an estimated cost of INR 84 crore.

The facility will be established on the premises of the old Ramanathapuram Collectorate, according to the Minister.

The Madurai cancer centre forms part of a wider state plan under which INR 673.44 crore has been allocated for five Regional Cancer Centres across Tamil Nadu.

The state also plans to upgrade healthcare infrastructure at the Government Rajaji Hospital.

“We are pleased to announce that the Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has sanctioned various projects for Madurai Rajaji Government Hospital with a total outlay of INR 143.05 crore,” the Health Minister said.

As part of the infrastructure, INR 7.5 crore has been allocated for the procurement of new medical equipment, following requests from doctors at the hospital, the Minister said.

The initiative also includes INR 2.29 crore to upgrade patient facilities, INR 2.80 crore to establish a "Neo-Genesis" unit for low-birth-weight infants, and INR 6.98 crore to construct hospital facilities as well as hostels for the nursing college and school; these projects are set to become operational soon.

Further, the Minister noted that an allocation of INR 43.18 crore has been made for an Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

In addition, a new Nursing College is being established in Madurai.

Furthermore, The state has also sanctioned INR 44 crore for a critical care block near the Anna Bus Stand in Madurai.

In a parallel development, the Minister announced 15 medical infrastructure development projects and the procurement of 76 pieces of modern medical equipment, together worth INR 111 crore, for Coimbatore.
