Maharashtra Approves INR 35-Cr Robotic Surgery System for GMCH Nagpur

With this installation, the institution is set to become the first state-run hospital in Maharashtra to install this technology.

The Maharashtra government has approved INR 35 crore for a single-access robotic surgery system at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur.

With the proposed installation, the GMCH is set to become the first state-run hospital in Maharashtra to instroduce this technology.

The proposed system is designed to support minimally invasive surgical procedures through a single small incision.

It uses a miniature camera and flexible robotic instruments, along with high-resolution 3D imaging, to help surgeons operate in areas that may be difficult to access through conventional techniques.

The imaging system is intended to provide a detailed view of the surgical area, helping surgeons access tumours in anatomically complex locations while limiting injury to surrounding tissues.

The technology is designed for multiple surgical procedures, including prostate cancer, urinary bladder tumours, gynaecological conditions, and tumours of the liver, pancreas, and abdomen.

Further, depending on the procedure and the patient's condition, the single-access approach may reduce incision size and blood loss and potentially lower the risk of infection.

Once the system becomes operational at GMCH, patients are expected to be able to access the advanced procedures through the Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) and other government concessions.

The development comes amid the adoption of advanced medical technologies by healthcare providers in Nagpur. KIMS Kingsway recently installed Central India’s first hybrid cathlab with an AI-enabled imaging system developed by GE HealthCare and Wipro.

The facility combines cardiac imaging and interventional capabilities to support complex cardiovascular procedures.
