Tamil Nadu Raises Health Insurance Cover to INR 25 Lakh, Plans 400-Bed Hospital

The Tamil Nadu government has increased the annual insurance coverage under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme from INR 5 lakh to INR 25 lakh and announced plans to establish a 400-bed multispecialty hospital in Perambur for INR 300 crore.

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay made the announcements in the state Assembly on Wednesday, saying the new Perambur hospital will serve the healthcare needs of north Chennai and provide advanced medical services.

The government will also create around 6,098 additional seats in nursing, pharmacy and paramedical courses at an estimated cost of INR 351 crore. The expansion will include seven new government nursing colleges offering 660 BSc Nursing seats.

Cancer Care Infrastructure

The state’s Chief Minister’s Cancer Care Mission will be upgraded at INR 673.44 crore. An integrated cancer treatment facility will be established at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

Regional cancer care centers will also be established at five government medical college hospitals as part of the expansion of cancer treatment services across the state.

The government also announced additional medical and surgical services for transgender persons under the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme. These services will be available at seven government medical college hospitals in Chennai, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Chengalpattu, Tiruvarur, Dharmapuri and Kanniyakumari.

“Medical care is not a concession; it is a basic right of every human being,” Vijay said while making the announcements in the Assembly.

The measures cover health insurance, hospital infrastructure, medical education capacity, cancer care and access to specialized services under the state’s public healthcare system.
