Tamil Nadu’s INR 110 Cr Boost to Upgrade Cancer Care in 17 Govt Hospitals

Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation will procure cutting-edge tools, including modular operating theatres for surgical oncology, radio frequency ablation machines for pain management, and CT simulators to aid faster cancer staging.

With cancer cases rising sharply, the Tamil Nadu government is stepping up its fight, sanctioning nearly INR 110 Cr to upgrade cancer diagnosis and treatment across 17 government hospitals over the next three years.

The funds are expected to fuel infrastructure and manpower upgrades in five regional cancer centers and 12 tertiary care hospitals including major facilities like Government Royapettah Hospital, Coimbatore Medical College, Madurai’s Government Rajaji Hospital, and Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.

The INR 110 Cr boost will be rolled out in phases:

  • INR 73.96 Cr in 2025-26
  • INR 19.6 Cr in 2026-27
  • INR 17.4 Cr in 2027-28

This follows the State Assembly’s commitment to improve cancer services, with a focus on early detection, advanced diagnostics, and stronger treatment infrastructure.

A government order from the Directorate of Medical Education flagged Tamil Nadu’s growing cancer burden as a serious strain on the public health system, demanding urgent upgrades in equipment and clinical capacity.

As part of the push, Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation will procure cutting-edge tools, including modular operating theatres for surgical oncology, radio frequency ablation machines for pain management, and CT simulators to aid faster cancer staging.
