Somerset Indus Capital Partners Invests in NU Hospitals
The investment will support NU Hospitals’ next phase of growth, including expansion into new markets and strengthening operational capabilities to serve a larger patient base in India and overseas.
Healthcare-focused private equity firm Somerset Indus Capital Partners has announced an investment in Bengaluru-based NU Hospitals, a specialty hospital chain focused on nephrology and urology care.
The investment will support NU Hospitals’ next phase of growth, including expansion into new markets and strengthening operational capabilities to serve a larger patient base in India and overseas.
This transaction marks Somerset Indus Capital Partners’ third investment from its third fund, aligning with the firm’s strategy of backing scalable healthcare platforms with a specialty-led approach. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
Founded in 1999, NU Hospitals operates a focused clinical model across nephrology, urology, fertility, and renal transplant services. Over the years, the hospital chain has expanded its footprint while maintaining a specialty-centric structure aimed at complex and long-term care requirements, particularly in kidney-related disorders.
According to the company, the fresh capital will be deployed to enter new geographies, enhance operational systems, and build capacity to address rising demand for specialised kidney and urology services. The expansion strategy includes both domestic growth and outreach to international patients seeking advanced renal care in India.
Ramesh Kannan, Partner at Somerset Indus Capital Partners, stated that the firm’s decision was influenced by NU Hospitals’ doctor-led operating model and its focus on addressing the increasing burden of chronic kidney disease in India, a segment witnessing sustained demand due to lifestyle and demographic shifts.
NU Hospitals has reported steady organic growth, supported by high doctor retention, robotics-enabled surgical procedures, and advanced clinical infrastructure. The chain also emphasizes medical education and research, running DNB programmes and publishing clinical research on an annual basis. Its hospitals hold multiple accreditations, including NABH, NABL, FEQH, and ISAR, covering quality, laboratory, and fertility standards.
Commenting on the development, Dr Prasanna Venkatesh, Managing Director, NU Hospitals, said the partnership would support the organisation’s plans to widen access to specialised kidney and urology care while maintaining clinical governance standards.
India continues to see a rising incidence of renal and urological conditions, creating sustained demand for specialty-led hospital networks. Investments in focused care platforms such as NU Hospitals reflect growing private equity interest in niche healthcare segments with long-term clinical and operational requirements.
