Providence, Compassus Expand Home-Based Care Joint Venture to California
The finalized agreement gives Compassus operational responsibility for 19 locations in the state, including 10 home health, one personal home care, six hospice, and two community-based palliative care centers.
Providence Health & Services has expanded its home-based care partnership with Compassus into California, marking the next phase of their joint venture, Providence at Home with Compassus.
The finalized agreement gives Compassus operational responsibility for 19 locations in the state, including 10 home health, one personal home care, six hospice and two community-based palliative care centers.
Expansion in Multiple States
The Providence–Compassus collaboration was first launched last year. In March, Compassus took over management of home health, hospital and palliative care locations in Alaska, Texas and Washington. The partners have stated their ultimate goal is to bring 41 total locations across those states, along with Oregon and California, under the joint venture.
In Oregon, the arrangement remains under regulatory review. The state health regulator completed a preliminary review in April, sought more details in June, and surveyed current and former employees in July. California, however, has moved ahead with the deal.
“This next phase of our joint venture with Compassus is another step toward transforming how care is delivered across our communities,” said Terri Warren, chief of community services at Providence. “By continuing to expand home-based services, we honor our legacy of care and invest in the future of health care where comfort, dignity and support are provided directly in patients’ homes. And we’re just getting started—more innovation and expansion are on the horizon.”
Providence leaders have previously emphasized that the partnership helps address patient demand, reduce hospital stays and readmissions, and cut costs. Providence President and CEO Erik Wexler earlier described the collaboration as a way of outsourcing certain services to “other providers that can deliver them more effectively.”
Compassus, which operates in 33 states, has also entered into management joint ventures with other nonprofit health systems, including Ascension, Bon Secours Mercy Health and OhioHealth.
