P D Hinduja Hospital Introduces Robotic-Assisted Knee and Hip Replacement System

The hospital said the technology is designed to improve surgical precision, implant alignment, and personalized joint replacement planning during orthopaedic procedures.

P D Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre has introduced the CORI Surgical System, a robotic-assisted platform for knee and hip replacement surgeries, across its Mahim and Khar facilities in Mumbai.

The hospital said the technology is designed to improve surgical precision, implant alignment, and personalized joint replacement planning during orthopaedic procedures.

Developed by Smith+Nephew, the CORI Surgical System is a handheld robotic-assisted platform used for total knee, partial knee, hip, and complex revision joint replacement surgeries. Unlike several conventional robotic systems, the platform does not require a pre-operative CT scan, which the hospital said can reduce radiation exposure and streamline surgical workflows.

The system maps a patient’s knee or hip anatomy during surgery and generates real-time intraoperative data to assist surgeons in planning and executing procedures. It also provides haptic feedback to support implant positioning, bone preparation, and joint alignment with millimetre-level precision.

According to the hospital, the technology may benefit patients with severe knee arthritis, chronic joint pain, instability, deformities, or joint damage that has not responded to medication, physiotherapy, or other conservative treatments.

The hospital added that robotic-assisted procedures using the CORI system are expected to support faster rehabilitation, reduced post-operative discomfort, improved mobility, and enhanced long-term implant performance.

As part of an introductory initiative, robotic-assisted knee and hip replacement procedures using the system will be offered at no additional cost for a limited period.

Gautam Khanna, CEO of P D Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, said the adoption of the platform is aimed at strengthening the hospital’s orthopaedic capabilities through data-driven and personalised surgical care.

Dr. Sanjay Agarwala, director of Professional Services and section head of Orthopaedics and Traumatology at the hospital, said the system provides real-time surgical information that supports decisions related to implant alignment, tissue balance, and positioning during procedures.

He added that the platform can also be used in complex revision joint replacement surgeries, expanding its applications beyond standard knee and hip replacements.

P D Hinduja Hospital operates two units in Mumbai with a combined capacity of 510 beds and provides healthcare services across more than 43 specialties. The hospital is accredited by NABH, CAP, and ISO, and has collaborations with institutions including King's College London and Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
