Novartis India Targets Therapy-Aligned Acquisitions & Tier 2-3 Expansion
The company expects stronger commercial control of key brands and expanded healthcare infrastructure outside major cities to create new opportunities for volume and patient reach.
Pharma company Novartis India Ltd (NIL) has outlined its next phase of growth around targeted acquisitions and deeper access to non-metro markets, with a focus on five therapy areas.
The company expects stronger commercial control of key brands and expanded healthcare infrastructure outside major cities to create new opportunities for volume and patient reach.
Novartis India has identified pain management, wellness, women's health, neuroscience, and transplant immunology as its five anchor therapy areas.
Within these segments, Novartis India plans to strengthen established brands including Voveran, Calcium Sandoz, Methergin, Tegrital, Myfortic and Simulect while exploring new avenues for growth through acquisitions.
Vikas Gupta, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Novartis India, stated that the company is focusing on deepening its reach into non-metro markets where its specialist franchises remain under-penetrated relative to their potential. This expansion is viewed as a direct lever for volume growth.
As part of its FY 2026-27 transition, Novartis India is also bringing established franchises such as Voveran, Methergin, Macalvit and Calcium Sandoz fully under its commercial control.
According to the annual report, this is expected to give NIL greater influence over commercialisation, pricing, lifecycle management and market development decisions for these products.
Beyond large metropolitan centres, improvements in healthcare infrastructure and the increasing availability of specialists in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities are creating opportunities for pharmaceutical companies to expand access.
Novartis India expects these developments, along with rising insurance coverage and government healthcare initiatives, to improve affordability and encourage greater uptake of therapies.
For Novartis India, the emphasis on acquisitions is therefore not positioned as expansion for its own sake.
Instead, the company is looking to identify opportunities that complement its existing therapy portfolio while using its established brands and distribution network to reach more patients across India's increasingly diverse healthcare market.
