With INR 1,164.98 Cr allocated, NIT’s investment in the twin hospitals aims to strengthen public healthcare in underserved areas.

Nagpur Improvement Trust has invested INR 1,164.98 Cr for the expansion of two major government hospital projects at Wathoda and Indora to upgrade public healthcare infrastructure of the city.

These twin projects aim to increase the number of government multispeciality hospitals in the city to six and add a combined total of 1,157 new beds, addressing critical healthcare demands in East and North Nagpur.

The INR 187.71 Cr, 300-bed Wathoda Hospital is under construction, while the INR 575.79 Cr, 857-bed Indora Hospital is in the bid evaluation stage.

Details of the Budget Allocation

NIT has already invested INR 43.07 Cr in the construction of Wathoda hospital.

"So far, we have completed two basement levels and laid the slab for the second floor. The work is progressing at full speed,” said the NIT official.

Spread over 7,345 sq meters, the G+9 building will feature six operating theatres, 38 outpatient departments (OPDs), 30 ICU beds, 15 neonatal ICU beds, and a 150-seat canteen.

So far, the government has released INR 116.54 Cr for the project, with INR 71.17 Cr still pending.

It will operate under an "Operate and Manage" model, though the exact managing authority, whether GMCH, IGMCH, or a private operator, has yet to be finalized.

The Indora hospital, in north Nagpur, will be built on a 7.18-acre plot and will be managed by the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMCH).

It will replace the current Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital and Research Centre (BAHRC) at the site, which presently offers only outpatient services.

Funding for the Indora project is jointly provided, with 75% of costs borne by the social justice department and the remaining 25% by the medical education department.

NIT officials have clarified that the existing hospital will continue to operate alongside the new facility, ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services during the transition.

These hospital projects are part of a larger INR 1,507.79 Cr budget announced by NIT for the fiscal year 2025-26, which marks an 83% increase over previous years.

Once completed, these projects will ease the burden on existing hospitals such as GMCH, IGMCH, AIIMS, and Daga Hospital.

The project aims to bring advanced medical services closer to residents, improve healthcare access, and support specialized treatment.
