Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center has appointed Shakeeb Akhter as its new Chief Digital Officer (CDO), where he will oversee the organization’s enterprise-wide digital strategy across clinical care, research, and administrative functions.

In his new role, Akhter will be responsible for designing and executing MSK’s long-term digital transformation roadmap, with a focus on integrating artificial intelligence, data systems, and digital tools into patient care and research operations.

Akhter joins MSK following his tenure at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he served as Senior Vice President and Chief Digital and Information Officer. During his time there, he led enterprise-wide initiatives spanning AI deployment, clinical informatics, cybersecurity, advanced analytics, and digital care delivery systems.

At MSK, he is expected to lead efforts to align digital infrastructure across clinical, research, and operational domains, supporting the institution’s broader strategy in precision medicine and technology-enabled oncology care.

“Shakeeb brings extraordinary vision, expertise and energy to this role at a pivotal moment for MSK,” said Selwyn M. Vickers, MD, FACS, President and CEO of MSK. He added that digital innovation, artificial intelligence, and data-driven discovery are increasingly central to improving patient care and advancing research outcomes.

Prior to CHOP, Akhter held leadership roles at Northwestern Medicine, where he worked on enterprise data and research informatics in collaboration with clinical and translational research programs. He also began his career at KPMG and Bank of America.

Akhter said he aims to accelerate MSK’s digital evolution by leveraging converging advancements in data, technology, and science to improve cancer care and outcomes.

He holds an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a BA in Economics from the University of Illinois.
