The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on 25 September 2024, focuses on maternal and newborn health, family planning, and nursing education.
The Government of Meghalaya has partnered significantly with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to improve healthcare outcomes across the state.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on 25 September 2024, focuses on maternal and newborn health, family planning, and nursing education.
Meghalaya now joins Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as one of the few Indian states collaborating with BMGF in health and agriculture.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Minister of Health & Family Welfare Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh signed the agreement. Sampath Kumar, Principal Secretary of the Health & Family Welfare Department, represented the state, while M Hari Menon, Director of BMGF India Country Office, signed on behalf of the foundation.
Through this four-year partnership, BMGF will provide financial and technical support in twelve key healthcare areas.
These include comprehensive primary healthcare, family planning, maternal and neonatal health, anemia management, immunization, nutrition, nursing education, and digital health. The agreement also covers agriculture and livestock development.
Furthermore, the collaboration aims to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality by improving access to family planning and managing conditions such as anemia.
“This initiative is a vital step towards improving healthcare access and outcomes for the most vulnerable populations in the state,” Dr Lyngdoh added.
The MoU sets out three core goals: lowering maternal, neonatal, and child mortality; enhancing the availability of health and nutrition services, especially for women and children; and strengthening local institutions to support sustainable healthcare improvements.
A major focus will be on improving healthcare delivery through digital solutions, with the Gates Foundation supporting the development of IT systems for primary healthcare.
Another key initiative is the enhancement of family planning services by increasing contraceptive options and availability.
In terms of maternal and newborn health, the partnership will target anemia and neonatal care. Efforts will be made to address childhood malnutrition through supplementary feeding programs and immunization drives.
Nursing education will receive a significant boost under the MoU, with plans to redesign the curriculum to meet global standards.
The agreement also includes initiatives to improve supply chain management for medical supplies, ensuring better availability of drugs and diagnostics in rural areas.
In speaking about the partnership, Menon stated, “This MoU represents our commitment to collaborating with the Government of Meghalaya to drive meaningful changes in healthcare, particularly for women and children. Our goal is to help the state build a sustainable healthcare system.”
The MoU also establishes a framework for monitoring and evaluating the initiatives' outcomes. Regular efficiency checks, performance assessments, and progress evaluations will be conducted to ensure the set objectives are met by 2030, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
