LeapFrog Investments Plans Up to $100 Mn India Healthcare Investment

The investment strategy comes as healthcare spending in India rises amid expanding insurance coverage and increased demand for diagnostics and preventive care.

Global private equity firm LeapFrog Investments plans to invest $80 million to $100 million in India’s healthcare sector over the next two years, targeting hospitals, specialty-care providers, pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, a senior executive told Reuters.

The investment strategy comes as healthcare spending in India rises amid expanding insurance coverage and increased demand for diagnostics and preventive care. India’s healthcare sector was valued at about $180 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $320 billion by 2028, according to government data cited by Reuters.

Biju Mohandas, global head and partner for healthcare at LeapFrog Investments, said the firm is evaluating investments across several healthcare segments. This includes an asset-light, single-specialty healthcare provider, although he did not disclose further details.

LeapFrog is also assessing hospital investments, particularly providers serving patients outside India’s major cities. Specialty-care opportunities under consideration include maternal and child health, ophthalmology and oncology.

“Our investment thesis is centred on two realities: growing insurance penetration and significant disposable income with the ability to afford quality healthcare,” Mohandas told Reuters.

The firm already has exposure to India’s healthcare market through investments in Redcliffe Labs, a diagnostics provider, and Healthify, a digital health platform.

Beyond healthcare services and digital health, LeapFrog is exploring opportunities in pharmaceuticals and medical equipment, according to Mohandas.

India has remained an active market for healthcare private equity and mergers and acquisitions. The healthcare and pharmaceutical sector recorded 594 M&A and private equity transactions worth more than $30 billion between 2022 and 2024, according to data from Grant Thornton Bharat and the Association of Healthcare Providers India.

LeapFrog is investing from an $808 million fund and related co-investment vehicles, giving the firm more than $1 billion in capital to deploy across Asia and Africa.

The firm has already deployed a significant portion of that capital, including recent investments in the Philippines and Vietnam, while identifying further deployment opportunities in India over the coming two years.
