Jharkhand Approves AI in Healthcare, Partners with Google to Modernize Digital Health Systems

Jharkhand aims to build an integrated health information system that can support real-time data access, improve coordination among healthcare providers, and enhance overall service delivery.

Jharkhand has approved the adoption of artificial intelligence in its healthcare system and a collaboration with Google to strengthen digital health infrastructure, aiming to enhance diagnostics, data management, and access to services, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

In recent months, Jharkhand has been working on a ‘hub and spoke’ model to connect tertiary institutions with district hospitals, improving access to specialised care.

Under this system, the Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Ranchi has already been linked with several district hospitals through a tele-ICU network, enabling remote critical care support.

The newly approved AI initiative is designed to complement such efforts by introducing advanced analytics and cloud-based systems into routine healthcare operations.

Officials have indicated that AI tools will support diagnostics, assist in managing large volumes of patient data, and help streamline workflows within healthcare facilities. These systems are expected to reduce delays, improve accuracy, and optimise resource allocation.

The collaboration with Google is likely to bring in scalable cloud infrastructure and technology expertise, enabling the state to deploy digital health solutions more efficiently.

By leveraging such platforms, Jharkhand aims to build an integrated health information system that can support real-time data access, improve coordination among healthcare providers, and enhance overall service delivery.

Building on Earlier AI-driven Healthcare Initiatives

The state’s focus on AI in healthcare is not entirely new. In December 2025, plans were announced to establish seven AI-based high-tech medical laboratories as part of a broader push to upgrade healthcare infrastructure.

Health Minister Irfan Ansari had then emphasised that “Advanced diagnostic and treatment facilities would ensure world-class healthcare for patients within the state and promote medical education and research.” The proposal also included strengthening medical colleges, upgrading RIMS and district hospitals, and developing additional facilities with central support under a 60:40 funding model.

With the latest cabinet approval, these earlier proposals appear to be converging into a more comprehensive digital health strategy.

While detailed timelines and operational frameworks are yet to be finalised, the state aims to create a more responsive, efficient, and accessible healthcare system for its population.
