Japanese Firm Establishes New R&D Centre in IIT Hyderabad to Advance Healthcare & Pharma

The company aims to integrate its industrial expertise with IIT Hyderabad’s research capabilities to scale innovation and commercial applications.

In a move to strengthen Indo-Japanese technology collaboration, Dai Nippon Printing (DNP), a leading Japanese corporation, has inaugurated a research and development centre at the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IIT-H).

Located at the IITH Technology Research Park (TRP), the initiative focuses on joint research and development across emerging technology domains.

The centre will enable academic–industry collaboration, bringing together researchers, engineers, and industry experts to develop next-generation solutions that accelerate innovation and real-world implementation.

The initial phase of the initiative will focus on developing synthesis routes for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), which are both critical to sustainable mobility and affordable healthcare, other than developing systems for electric mobility.

For the healthcare segment, the initiative seeks to support the development of medical and pharmaceutical research capabilities.

Additionally, DNP plans to leverage IIT-H’s established pharmaceutical capabilities to advance API development, focusing on efficient synthesis routes and scale-up manufacturing capabilities through Indian partnerships.

As part of the initiative, a formal agreement has been signed between IIT-H and DNP to enable joint research, focusing on industry-linked innovation and deployable outcomes.

Through the collaboration, the company aims to integrate its industrial expertise with IIT Hyderabad’s research strength to scale innovation and commercial applications.

The R&D centre is designed to operate as a hub for innovation across healthcare, Pharmaceuticals, Advanced Manufacturing, and mobility technology, aimed at strengthening the strategic relevance of this collaboration, with potential to expand into the Middle East and African markets.

Further, it seeks to advance knowledge exchange and joint innovation programs, promote talent development, offer students and researchers opportunities to work on globally relevant technologies, and deepen the India–Japan partnership in research and technology.

Commenting on the new partnership, Prof. B.S. Murty, Director, IIT-H, said, “The inauguration of DNP’s R&D centre at IITH marks an important step in strengthening global industry–academia collaboration. This partnership brings together cutting-edge industrial technology and academic research to address critical challenges in mobility and healthcare. It also reinforces IITH's role as a hub for translational research and innovation aligned with national priorities and global needs. These collaborations help bridge research with real-world application and create opportunities for students to work on relevant technologies.”

The collaboration forms a part of the Indo-Japanese technology tie-up and has received support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), which supported collaboration between IIT-H and Japanese partners.

The new center was inaugurated in the presence of the Japanese Consul General in Chennai, representatives from Japanese government agencies such as JICA and JETRO, the Director of IIT Hyderabad, professors with close ties to Japan, and major Japanese corporations.

While highlighting the significance of Hyderabad in the India-Japanese research technology partnership, Matsuno Issei, India Lead, JICA, said, “Hyderabad offers strong potential, especially in semiconductor design and engineering, as India’s ecosystem in this field evolves.”

He added that JICA continued to support collaboration through initiatives such as the Telangana Start-up and Innovation Ecosystem Strengthening Project.
