INR 1,000 Cr Cancer Hospital, Medical Colleges to Come Up in Hamirpur: Himachal CM
Sukhu reviewed the proposed site for the cancer care center and said the facility would bring quality healthcare services closer to residents.
Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Friday announced that a modern cancer hospital, along with nursing and dental colleges, will be developed at the Hamirpur Medical College complex at an estimated cost of INR 1,000 crore.
The announcement was made during his inspection of ongoing construction works at Dr. Radhakrishnan Government Medical College. Sukhu reviewed the proposed site for the cancer care center and said the facility would bring quality healthcare services closer to residents.
According to an official statement, Himachal Pradesh reports one of the highest numbers of cancer cases in the country after the northeastern states. The proposed dedicated cancer hospital in Hamirpur is expected to expand access to oncology services within the state.
The chief minister said 11 new specialist departments have been approved for the Hamirpur Cancer Hospital. These include medical oncology, surgical oncology, pain relief and supportive care, nuclear medicine, anaesthesia and critical care, and pathology. Additional departments will cover paediatric oncology, radiology and imaging, gynaecologic oncology, radiation therapy, and stem cell and bone marrow transplants.
By consolidating these services at one location, the government aims to reduce the need for patients to travel outside Himachal Pradesh for advanced cancer treatment. Sukhu said this would help save both time and expenses for patients and their families.
Highlighting the rising incidence of cancer cases, the chief minister emphasized the importance of systematic screening, prevention, monitoring, recording, and timely diagnosis.
During his interaction with doctors at the medical college, Sukhu noted that several medical colleges in the state have increasingly become referral institutions. He stressed the need for systemic improvements to ensure comprehensive healthcare services are available within Himachal Pradesh, according to the statement.
