India’s INR 64,000 Cr Health Infra Mission Builds Digital-First PHCs
Additionally, 744 Integrated Public Health Laboratories (IPHLs) are set to be established at the district level to provide standardized diagnostic services and digital lab integration.
India has approved INR 33,081.82 Cr under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) to upgrade core public health infrastructure across States and Union Territories.
Spread across five years from FY 2021–22 to FY 2025–26, the funds are part of the larger INR 64,180 Cr outlay for strengthening India’s health systems across all levels of care.
As of now, approvals have been granted for the construction and strengthening of 10,609 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs in rural areas that previously lacked buildings, along with 5,456 Urban Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (U-AAMs). These primary health facilities will focus on preventive and outpatient care, including in slum and slum-like areas.
In parallel, 2,151 Block Public Health Units (BPHUs) have been approved to boost local disease surveillance and response capacity.
Additionally, 744 Integrated Public Health Laboratories (IPHLs) are set to be established at the district level to provide standardized diagnostic services and digital lab integration.
The plan also includes the development of 621 Critical Care Hospital Blocks (CCBs), which will expand intensive care capacity across districts — especially those with populations over 5 lakh, in readiness for future pandemics and emergencies.
PM-ABHIM is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme with select Central Sector Components. It aims to prepare India’s health system to better handle current and future health threats by building institutional and digital capacity at the primary, secondary and tertiary care levels.
According to a written reply by the Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, the infrastructure push will help States and UTs respond more effectively to future public health crises.
