ICMR-NIIH Emerges as Global Hub for Rare Immune Disorders

The centre utilizes advanced diagnostic techniques, including flow cytometry-based assays and genetic testing, to detect a broad range of immune disorders and enable timely medical intervention.
The Centre of Excellence (CoE) for Inborn Errors of Immunity (IEIs) at the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Immunohaematology (ICMR-NIIH) is establishing itself as a key hub for the diagnosis and management of rare immune disorders, both within India and internationally.
Currently, the center supports approximately 150 hospitals across India and provides expertise to countries including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, the UAE, and the United States.
Dr Manisha Madkaikar, Director of ICMR-NIIH and ICMR-CRMCH, said, “Beyond India, our services have helped patients from countries like the UAE. We actively collaborate with global institutions, including leading centres in the USA, for access to specialised functional assays that aid in confirming genetic diagnoses.”
The Department of Pediatric Immunology at ICMR-NIIH has developed a dedicated facility for diagnosing IEIs.
“Our Centre of Excellence offers comprehensive diagnostic services and is at the forefront of both research and clinical testing for children suspected to have immune deficiencies,” Dr Madkaikar noted.
The center utilizes advanced diagnostic techniques, including flow cytometry-based assays and genetic testing, to detect a broad range of immune disorders and enable timely medical intervention.
In addition to diagnostic services, the center offers prenatal testing for families at risk, helping facilitate informed reproductive decisions and early clinical management.
Functioning as a national referral hub, the CoE provides specialised diagnostic services and expert guidance to over 50 medical colleges across the country in managing complex pediatric immunology cases.
Dr Madkaikar also underlined the center’s role in professional training and research, contributing to capacity building in this niche healthcare area.
By bridging national needs with international collaborations, the ICMR-NIIH CoE for IEIs is emerging as a vital player in the global response to rare immune disorders.
