The hospital has used XR for over 150 patients in complex cases, enabling visualization of organs as holograms, 3D printing of anatomical models, and improved surgical planning.
AI-Enabled Imaging for Cardiac Care
Kochi has added Kerala’s first AI-enabled imaging technology for advanced cardiac diagnostics with the installation of Optis Mobile Next Ultrasound 2.0 at Amrita. This technology helps in more precise detection of coronary blockages and supports more effective treatment planning.
Robotic-Assisted Surgery
Apollo Adlux Hospitals in Kochi installed one of India’s advanced robotic-assisted surgery systems, Da Vinci Xi. These systems allow for minimally invasive surgeries with greater precision, less blood loss, and faster recovery. Aster Medcity had also earlier made strides in robotic surgeries, serving multiple specialties.
Smart Ambulances and Pre-Hospital Technology
Aster Medcity has rolled out a 5G-enabled “assisted reality” ambulance in Kochi, essentially, a virtual emergency room on wheels. Equipped with live specialist support via smart glasses and on-board diagnostic tools such as ECG, ultrasound, and ABG (arterial blood gas) testing, it brings critical care closer to the patient’s doorstep.
Neuro-Endoscopy Center
Amrita Hospital has also launched the first Centre for Neuro Endoscopy in Kerala. This adds to the city’s ability to handle delicate neurosurgical procedures with minimally invasive techniques, leading to better patient outcomes and shorter hospital stays.

On the public healthcare side, Kochi is integrating digital health services. For example, the Nettoor Family Health Centre has launched an E-Health project that allows online booking of doctor consultations, with the long-term goal of integrating government hospitals into a unified network. - Skill Gaps: Surgeons, technicians, and medical staff need training to adopt new tools. There is often a lag between technology availability and skill-uptake.
- Integration & Interoperability: Different hospitals and clinics may use different systems; sharing data securely while respecting patient privacy is a major concern.
- Equity & Access: New technology often starts in private or high-end hospitals. Ensuring that public health facilities also benefit is essential so as not to deepen disparities.
