Can Micro Hospitals Become the Future of Specialised Healthcare in India?
By Dr Sandip Banerjee, Senior Consultant, Fortis Hospital and Founder, Pelvinic Micro-Hospital.
India’s healthcare system has long been defined by its extremes. At one end, small clinics offer basic consultations. At the other, massive corporate hospitals, 500 to 1,000 beds stand equipped for the most advanced procedures. But between these two ends lies a glaring, structurally important gap. Rural India-home to nearly 70% of the population, has access to only 13% of primary health centres, while 80% of specialists reside in cities, leaving vast populations chronically underserved. 70-80% of all hospital beds in India are concentrated in metro and Tier-1 cities, which have barely 30% of the population.
