The blueprint also includes strengthening Gujarat's public health and regulatory ecosystem by constructing a new NABL-standard Food and Drugs laboratory.

Gujarat has announced an INR 547 Cr redevelopment plan for the New Mental Campus in Ahmedabad, converting the site impacted by the AI171 air crash into a major healthcare and medical education hub featuring a Paraplegia and Spine Hospital, rehabilitation facilities, and a new NABL-standard Food and Drugs laboratory.

The campus, which spans approximately 1,71,100 square metres, currently houses staff quarters, undergraduate and postgraduate hostels, and other institutional facilities.

As part of the first phase of redevelopment, around 25,000 sq m of land will be repurposed for a Paraplegia and Spine Hospital, a rehabilitation centre, a physiotherapy college, and hostel accommodation for 500 students.

Government estimates place the total investment for these facilities at INR 295 Cr. Of this, INR 175 Cr has been earmarked for the rehabilitation centre, physiotherapy college, and hostel infrastructure, while INR 120 Cr has been allocated for the specialised hospital.

Health Minister Praful Pansheriya said the state intends to rebuild the area with a long-term focus on healthcare and education. "The wounds of the tragedy will be transformed into a resolve for a temple of healthcare and a temple of education, creating a new era in healthcare and new hopes in education," he said.

The blueprint also includes strengthening Gujarat's public health and regulatory ecosystem by constructing a new NABL-standard Food and Drugs laboratory.

The proposed G+7 facility will be developed on nearly 3,100 square metres of land within the New Mental Campus and is expected to require an investment of approximately INR 50 Cr.

Officials have indicated that the laboratory will be modelled on the NABL-accredited facility currently operating in Vadodara and is expected to enhance pharmaceutical testing and quality assurance capabilities across the state.

Beyond healthcare infrastructure, the project aims to create an integrated ecosystem that combines patient care, rehabilitation services, medical education, research, and workforce development.

Government records suggest that once completed, the redeveloped New Mental Campus will emerge as one of Gujarat's prominent centres for healthcare, rehabilitation, medical research, and medical education.
