General Insurance Council Creates New CEO Role, Appoints Dr S Prakash

In this role, Prakash will work closely with insurers, hospitals, regulators, and other stakeholders to strengthen the health insurance value chain.

The General Insurance Council has appointed Dr S Prakash as CEO for Health Insurance Ecosystem and Strategic Partnerships, introducing a new leadership role aimed at advancing reforms, standardization, and collaboration across the health insurance sector.

In this role, Prakash will work closely with insurers, hospitals, regulators, and other stakeholders to strengthen the health insurance value chain.

His mandate includes advancing standard treatment protocols, addressing fraud, waste, and abuse, and improving grievance redressal through common mechanisms.

The role also focuses on supporting the adoption of shared hospital empanelment frameworks and cost benchmarks, alongside promoting digitization, interoperability, and faster, more predictable claims processing.

According to the council, the position has been created to reduce friction between payers and providers, improve trust across the ecosystem, and align health insurance practices with evolving medical science while keeping affordability and sustainability in focus.

Prakash brings over three decades of experience spanning clinical practice and health insurance. A medical professional by training, he has spent nearly 18 years in leadership roles within the health insurance sector.

He has also been associated with large-scale health schemes in South India that expanded organized healthcare access to more than 12 crore people.

Commenting on the appointment, General Insurance Council Chairman Tapan Singhel said the role is intended to improve coordination across the ecosystem and make health insurance more predictable for policyholders.

He highlighted the need for “greater transparency and better standardization of care” to ensure smoother journeys from hospital admission to claim settlement.
