Future of Connected Healthcare: Building a Patient-Centric Digital Ecosystem in India

The healthcare ecosystem in India has been working on solving the issue of scalability for decades, having more hospitals, beds, and doctors. However, the trickier problem that India is now starting to solve is continuity: making sure that information about an individual's health moves with him/her regardless of which particular hospital has generated the data. This is the true motivation behind digitisation in India.

The Ambition Behind the Push

India’s digital infrastructure framework has been recognised by global policy experts as something that other nations can take cues from, because of the presence of both digital infrastructure at a country level and major health programs, which present India with the chance of being a pioneer of digital health rather than just a follower. This means simply creating an interconnected digital infrastructure based on a citizen’s digital identity that would integrate electronic health records, wearables, telemedicine, and hospital information systems.

What the Data Actually Shows

This transition is desired by the people. In recent consumer studies, it has been observed that there is up to two-thirds acceptance among digitally-savvy Indians towards digital health solutions, which is even higher among individuals suffering from chronic illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular problems. With the advent of the pandemic, the need for the transition has gone from being an idea to becoming a requirement, and the consumers who have been provided digital healthcare cannot go back to what they were used to before.

In terms of infrastructure, it can be said that the connective technology upon which this ambition rides is the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). As of today, more than 90 crore Ayushman Bharat Health Accounts (ABHA) registrations have been made all over the country, and this provides a unique digital ID for citizens to share their health records without restrictions.

Where the Model is Already Working

A connected and patient-centric approach to healthcare doesn't manifest itself through any single aspect – it is evident in a number of areas in the healthcare system:

Large-scale telemedicine: Hospital networks use their influence and reach to promote virtual consultations and introduce the concept of interconnectivity and systems integration as integral elements of treatment, not just extras.

Integration of insurance claims and processes: The national health claims exchange is now introducing standardised procedures for hospitals and insurance agencies to facilitate document exchanges and eliminate the paperwork delays associated with reimbursements.

Connectivity of diagnostic and laboratory results: Laboratories have started adding results directly to the patients' digital health records, which means that a report created in one city will become available to a physician in another city almost immediately, without waiting for paper or PDF versions to be mailed.

Remote monitoring integration: Home health data is gradually becoming integrated with the same systems as hospital records, which means that a doctor studying a patient's history has access to all his or her data.

The Interoperability Problem Data Alone Can't Solve

Being able to share digital identities is different from being able to share data languages. Scholarly studies conducted in international journals about India's digital health strategy mention that the nation purposefully learned from the health IT experiences of America, Britain, South Korea, and Singapore, owing to the fact that problems with interoperability in other nations led to the presence of health data that could not be used. Another scholarly publication about the status of digital health adoption in India highlights that the lack of standardised data languages is an issue that continues to impede effective communication between patients and providers in the digital age.

What's Still Missing

The larger issue of trust emerges here. The health data protection system in India is still struggling to keep pace with the volumes of data currently produced, and experts who have analysed the field clearly point to this as a problem; indeed, having an adequate and fully implemented data protection system will be crucial for continued public trust in the system. Public policy initiatives such as the Digital Health Incentive Scheme seek to drive smaller hospitals and clinics into adopting systems that are fully compliant with standards, but such adoption takes time, and small hospitals and clinics often do not have the funds to act quickly.

Where This is Headed

But there’s no doubt about which way the future is headed: from facility-based treatments to virtual and at-home options, from static records to those that are continually updated, and from disjointed systems to one cohesive layer that insurers, hospitals, and diagnostic laboratories can read from.

The next layer is sure to come in the form of predictive clinical support, powered by AI, once data is consistently reliable. In terms of the digital identity layer, India definitely has what most other nations would envy. But what it lacks now is the ability to get everyone working on it to follow the same language standards, not to mention a solid regulatory framework that inspires patients’ trust.

But the measure of success for India’s digital healthcare ecosystem will be how rarely a patient has to go through their entire medical record again until it gets heard.

As the country's digital health infrastructure matures, true success should not be measured in the number of ABHA IDs but rather by how few times a person has to repeat their medical history for it to be taken into account.
