IIT Kanpur Launches Wadhwani Innovation Centre to Accelerate Life Sciences, MedTech Research

The Centre is expected to help researchers address some of the practical challenges involved in taking an innovation from the laboratory to the market.

IIT Kanpur has launched the Wadhwani Innovation Centre for Life Sciences and Medical Technologies, a Centre of Excellence designed to help move research from laboratories towards validated healthcare products and solutions.

The Centre will receive a $5 Mn contribution over five years to support researchers through different stages of innovation, including development, validation and commercialisation.

The Wadhwani Innovation Centre will work across a broad range of healthcare applications, including therapeutics, regenerative medicine, drug delivery, vaccines, medical devices and diagnostics.

Its focus will also extend to emerging areas such as neurodegenerative diseases, mental health, antimicrobial resistance and AI-enabled healthcare.

Beyond research support, the Centre is expected to help researchers address some of the practical challenges involved in taking an innovation from the laboratory to the market.

This includes technology validation, intellectual property management and navigating regulatory processes. It will also facilitate industry connections for technology transfer and commercialisation.

IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal said the institute’s biomedical research ecosystem, including its work in regenerative medicine, molecular medicine, neuroscience and artificial intelligence, provides a foundation for the Centre of Excellence.

The Wadhwani Innovation Centre is part of the Wadhwani Innovation Network (WIN)-IITK initiative of the Wadhwani Foundation, which seeks to strengthen research translation and commercialisation.

The Centre was inaugurated in the presence of Upendra Kumar Singh, Director General, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), New Delhi.
