Function Integrates Lab Data Into ChatGPT Health to Enable Grounded AI Conversations

The move is designed to support more data-grounded health discussions within ChatGPT by anchoring responses to verified diagnostic information rather than generic guidance.

Function has announced a strategic integration with OpenAI’s newly launched ChatGPT Health ecosystem, allowing its members to securely connect AI conversations with summaries of their personal laboratory data.

The move is designed to support more data-grounded health discussions within ChatGPT by anchoring responses to verified diagnostic information rather than generic guidance.

Under the integration, Function members can authorize ChatGPT Health to access high-level summaries of their lab results, covering more than 160 biomarkers. These summaries are drawn from Function’s dataset of over 50 million lab tests. Once connected, ChatGPT Health can reference this information during conversations, providing responses that reflect an individual’s metabolic and diagnostic context.

A central focus of the integration is addressing a longstanding challenge in health-focused artificial intelligence: hallucination, where AI systems generate confident but inaccurate medical statements due to a lack of personalized data. By grounding conversations in lab-based summaries, the integration introduces a diagnostic reference point intended to improve accuracy and relevance in AI-generated responses.

Authorization is handled directly within the ChatGPT interface or through the dedicated ChatGPT Health space. Users can choose whether to grant access and can revoke permissions at any time, retaining control over how their health information is used. According to the companies, ChatGPT accesses only summarized lab insights rather than raw datasets, limiting data exposure while still enabling contextual understanding.

The integration also extends Function’s broader Medical Intelligence Lab (MI Lab) platform, which aggregates laboratory testing, imaging, and wearable data into a unified health profile. Function’s MI Lab includes imaging capabilities such as 22-minute whole-body MRI scans, alongside continuous data streams from connected devices. The ChatGPT Health connection represents an additional layer where this aggregated data can inform AI-driven interactions.

The announcement comes as OpenAI expands ChatGPT Health as a dedicated environment for health-related conversations, with an emphasis on safety, user consent, and contextual grounding. Function’s integration positions laboratory data as a core input within this ecosystem, aligning with broader industry efforts to combine generative AI with structured clinical and diagnostic information.

While the integration does not position ChatGPT as a diagnostic or treatment tool, it reflects a growing push toward incorporating verified health data into conversational AI platforms to support more personalized and context-aware interactions.
