Dr. Nikhil Tandon Appointed Interim Director of AIIMS Delhi Following Leadership Change
The appointment is temporary and will remain in place for up to six months or until a regular Director is appointed, whichever is earlier.
AIIMS Delhi has appointed Dr. Nikhil Tandon as its interim Director following the exit of Dr. M. Srinivas, who has taken up a full-time role at NITI Aayog.
According to an official memorandum issued on April 27, Dr. Tandon will assume the additional charge with immediate effect. The appointment is temporary and will remain in place for up to six months or until a regular Director is appointed, whichever is earlier.
Dr. Tandon currently serves as Dean (Academic) and Head of the Department of Endocrinology at AIIMS Delhi. The decision places the institute’s administrative leadership in the hands of an internal senior faculty member amid the transition.
The memorandum also clarifies that Dr. Tandon will not receive any additional remuneration or honorarium for taking on the interim role, despite the expanded administrative responsibilities.
Dr. Srinivas, who previously led AIIMS Delhi, has moved to NITI Aayog, triggering the leadership change. Before his tenure at AIIMS, he served as Dean at ESIC Medical College and Hospital in Hyderabad and has a background in pediatric surgery.
With more than two decades of experience in public healthcare, Dr. Tandon has been associated with AIIMS Delhi in both clinical and academic capacities. His work has focused on endocrinology, including diabetes and cardio-metabolic disorders, along with public health research.
The interim appointment is aimed at ensuring continuity in the institute’s operations, including patient care, academic activities, and ongoing research, while the selection process for a permanent Director is underway.
AIIMS Delhi remains one of India’s leading public healthcare and medical research institutions, and the transition comes amid ongoing administrative and policy responsibilities at the national level.
