Delhi Mayor Announces 100-Bed Critical Care Unit at Swami Dayanand Hospital

The upcoming facility will be developed under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission and is aimed at strengthening critical care services in East Delhi.

Swami Dayanand Hospital will receive a new 100-bed Critical Care Unit (CCU) equipped with intensive care and emergency facilities, Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi announced during a hospital inspection on Friday.

The upcoming facility will be developed under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission and is aimed at strengthening critical care services in East Delhi.

According to the mayor, the new unit will include an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), nursery facilities, and an emergency operation theatre. The project is expected to improve access to advanced care for residents in the region and reduce referrals to other hospitals.

“The construction of the Critical Care Unit will enable residents of east Delhi to access better medical treatment closer to their homes,” Wahi said during the visit.

The announcement came during an inspection of the hospital in Dilshad Garden, where the mayor reviewed patient care facilities, sanitation conditions, and preparedness measures amid ongoing heatwave conditions in the national capital.

During the visit, Wahi also inaugurated a newly constructed air-conditioned waiting area for attendants accompanying patients. He directed hospital officials to add more benches to improve public convenience within the premises.

Hospital officials said approximately 4,000 patients visit the outpatient department (OPD) at Swami Dayanand Hospital each day.

The mayor also reviewed heatwave preparedness measures at the hospital, including arrangements related to additional patient beds, oral rehydration solution (ORS) availability, cooling infrastructure, and sanitation management.

Officials were instructed to strengthen cleanliness measures across the hospital campus and improve accommodation facilities for nursing staff. Wahi also directed authorities to install water sprinklers in the hospital park area and operationalize air coolers after maintenance and cleaning.

The CCU project is part of broader efforts to expand healthcare infrastructure and emergency preparedness capacity in Delhi’s public health system.
