CommonSpirit, Humana Ink Three-Year National Medicare Advantage Network Agreement

The agreement not only preserves existing network access but also restores CommonSpirit’s relationship with Humana in certain areas of Colorado and Texas, ensuring Medicare Advantage members continue to access their preferred providers.

CommonSpirit Health and Humana have finalized a three-year agreement to maintain CommonSpirit in-network across all 24 states where it operates, the health system announced Monday. The deal comes after nearly a year of discussions between the two organizations.

The agreement not only preserves existing network access but also restores CommonSpirit’s relationship with Humana in certain areas of Colorado and Texas, ensuring Medicare Advantage members continue to access their preferred providers.

Rising healthcare costs have intensified negotiations between payers and providers, with several hospitals recently exiting payer networks due to reimbursement concerns. In this context, maintaining network stability is considered critical for patient care.

Harpreet Cheema, senior vice president of payer strategy and analytics at CommonSpirit, said the arrangement “reflects our commitment to our Medicare Advantage patients, ensuring they can continue to see their trusted doctors and receive vital care within their own community.” Cheema emphasized that the primary goal has been safeguarding patient access to essential health services.

The health system also highlighted the need for Medicare Advantage programs to function effectively amid widespread cost pressures, noting its ongoing efforts to strengthen MA offerings for members.

Caraline Coats, senior vice president of provider strategy and operations at Humana, added that the agreement “reflects our shared focus on supporting better health outcomes and a dependable, patient-centered experience.” She noted that the partnership ensures members have uninterrupted access to the care and providers they rely on most.

The agreement underscores the importance of collaboration between payers and providers to maintain network stability and continuity of care for Medicare Advantage beneficiaries, even as financial pressures and reimbursement challenges continue to affect the broader healthcare system.
