Aster Whitefield Hospital Launches Karnataka’s First Dedicated Liver ICU
The unit, named SHIELD (Specialized Hepatic Intensive & Emergency Liver Division), is structured to provide focused critical care through continuous monitoring and coordinated clinical interventions.
Aster Whitefield Hospital has launched Karnataka’s first dedicated Liver Intensive Care Unit (ICU), designed to manage patients with severe liver conditions, including liver failure, biliary disorders, and transplant-related complications.
The unit, named SHIELD (Specialized Hepatic Intensive & Emergency Liver Division), is structured to provide focused critical care through continuous monitoring and coordinated clinical interventions. The facility brings together hepatologists, liver transplant surgeons, gastroenterologists, and critical care specialists to address complex and rapidly evolving liver conditions.
The launch comes amid a growing burden of liver diseases in India, where patients are often diagnosed at advanced stages. Speaking at the inauguration, Dr. C. N. Manjunath, Member of Parliament, highlighted the need for early and specialized intervention. He noted that dedicated infrastructure could improve response time and survival outcomes in severe liver cases.
According to Dr. H. R. S. Girn, Senior Consultant – HPB and Liver Transplant Surgeon at Aster Whitefield Hospital, the ICU is designed as a single-point care facility integrating hepatology, surgery, transplantation, and interventional services. He emphasized that patients with conditions such as decompensated cirrhosis or acute liver failure require rapid, coordinated treatment, which a dedicated ICU setup enables.
The facility also aims to streamline referral pathways and provide structured care delivery for patients requiring advanced interventions. In addition to clinical care, the unit is expected to support training for specialists in liver-focused critical care.
Hospital officials stated that the ICU is equipped for continuous patient monitoring and is designed to handle high-acuity cases requiring multidisciplinary management. The initiative aims to address gaps in liver care infrastructure in the region by providing timely access to specialized treatment.
The Liver ICU will serve as a centralized unit for critical liver care, providing integrated clinical management for patients with life-threatening liver conditions.
