Amazon Pharmacy Rolls Out Same-Day Delivery Service in LA & NY

Amazon Pharmacy extends same-day medication delivery to New York City and Los Angeles, with plans for further expansion across the U.S.

Amazon Pharmacy, a subsidiary of the retail giant Amazon, has rolled out same-day medication delivery service to New York City and Los Angeles.

With plans to include a dozen more US cities by the year's end, Amazon aims to revolutionize the pharmacy industry by leveraging innovative delivery methods and cutting-edge technology.

According to the company, it plans to utilize eco-friendly delivery vehicles such as electric bikes and electronic vans, choosing the most efficient method to ensure prompt delivery of prescriptions to customers.

Sharing insights, Doug Herrington, CEO, Amazon Stores, Worldwide, said, “We are building the fastest and most convenient service for the home delivery of prescription medications by integrating Amazon Pharmacy's deliveries into our existing world-class logistics network.”

Leveraging Tech & AI

Amazon Pharmacy's expansion efforts are backed by a focus on leveraging technology to enhance the pharmacy experience.

Dr Vin Gupta, CMO, Amazon Pharmacy, emphasized the importance of speed to treatment and eliminating extended wait times for medicines.

According to him, "The current pharmacy experience is broken, with patients facing long pharmacy lines and unexpected prices at the counter. Amazon Pharmacy is tapping its world-class logistics network, along with a variety of cutting-edge technologies, to change that."

Furthermore, Dr Gupta highlighted the use of generative AI to enhance processing efficiency, particularly in decoding prescriptions accurately and swiftly.

"We're trying to remove as much operator error and decoding of a script as possible to process these scripts as fast as possible," he added.

Dr Gupta further underscored Amazon Pharmacy's focus on providing comprehensive clinical support, including 24/7 access to pharmacists. He said, "Our unique partnership model with healthcare providers goes beyond logistics, prioritizing clinical excellence and patient-centric care."

Amazon Pharmacy is also integrating generative AI, ML, and new technologies in its pharmacy operations to expedite prescription fulfillment.

Highlighting the role of AI in streamlining processes, Kelvin Downes, director of fulfillment for Amazon Pharmacy, said, "AI can streamline prep work that historically would take hours down to mere minutes or even seconds and reduce administrative errors."

Furthermore, Amazon Pharmacy aims to check all the boxes regarding direct-to-door delivery, price transparency, and clinical excellence.

Through its innovative methods in healthcare delivery, the company is reshaping the pharmacy sector, providing patients with unparalleled convenience and access to necessary medications.

Partnerships & Collaborations

Amazon Pharmacy's growth strategy involves strategic partnerships with major health plans and pharmaceutical companies.

Notably, the company forged alliances with entities such as Blue Shield of California and Eli Lilly to enhance prescription affordability and accessibility for millions of consumers nationwide.

In August, Blue Shield of California announced its decision to partner with Amazon Pharmacy to manage prescription costs for its health plan members, offering home delivery of prescription medications to nearly five million members.

Additionally, Eli Lilly recently tapped Amazon's pharmacy unit to provide home delivery for diabetes, migraine, and obesity medications, expanding access to vital treatments for patients nationwide.
