Rezum therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for BPH that involves injecting sterile water vapor into the obstructing prostate tissue.
Ahmedabad-based Aarna Super-Speciality Hospital in Ahmedabad has introduced the Rezum machine, a new treatment option for Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH).
This condition, which commonly affects men over 50, leads to symptoms including a weak urinary stream, frequent urination, and incomplete bladder emptying.
Dr Rohit Joshi, chairman and chief urologist at Aarna Super-Speciality Hospital, said, “We are privileged to be the first hospital in Gujarat to install the Rezum technology. Pioneering the Rezum technology in the state reflects our commitment to providing the highest quality of care with advanced medical technologies to our patients. We have already successfully treated many patients with promising results.”
Dr Joshi is also claimed to be the first urologist to perform a prostate urethral Lift in Gujarat, demonstrating extensive experience in advanced urological procedures
Rezum therapy is a minimally invasive treatment for BPH that involves injecting sterile water vapor into the obstructing prostate tissue, the Hospital said.
This process causes cell death and the subsequent tissue reabsorption, alleviating the obstruction. The procedure lasts 5-7 minutes, requires minimal anesthesia, and offers a quicker recovery compared to traditional methods.
Traditional treatments for BPH include medications and surgical options, which often come with significant side effects such as sexual dysfunction and prolonged recovery times.
Rezum therapy aims to address these issues by providing a less invasive alternative.
As the Hospital informed, Rezum therapy is particularly advantageous for two groups of BPH patients. Firstly, younger patients seeking to preserve sexual function and minimize hospitalization benefit from its rapid recovery.
Secondly, elderly or high-risk patients can undergo the procedure with minimal anesthesia and reduced risks.
A notable case involved an 83-year-old man in Vadodara who underwent Rezum therapy after suffering from urinary retention caused by prostate enlargement. The patient, who had been reliant on a catheter due to multiple comorbidities, experienced a significant improvement.
Dr Haresh Thummar, senior consultant urologist at Zydus Hospitals in Vadodara, explained, “He was not fit for any kind of anesthesia due to his serious cardiac and lung issues. With multiple comorbidities, he had a very high risk for any anesthesia. He and his family members had even lost hope for a catheter-free life.”
Earlier in 2023, Urokul Hospital in Pune introduced Rezum therapy, marking its debut as a prostate gland treatment technology in India.
Established in 2013, Aarna Super-Speciality Hospital is a prominent healthcare provider in Ahmedabad. With facilities in Paldi and Maninagar, both equipped with modern amenities, the hospital continues to expand its range of medical technologies and treatments.
