Virtua Health & ChristianaCare Plan Joint Health System Across Four States

The combined system would span more than 10 counties across New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, encompassing over 600 sites of care and nearly 30,000 employees.

Virtua Health and ChristianaCare have signed a non-binding letter of intent (LOI) to explore creating a new regional not-for-profit health system.

The combined system would span more than 10 counties across New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, encompassing over 600 sites of care and nearly 30,000 employees.

According to Virtua Health president and CEO Dennis W. Pullin, the agreement marks "an exciting first step in a collaborative journey to amplify the strengths of two trusted health systems."

The health systems intend to enhance access to urgent, primary, and behavioral health services. The proposed entity will also focus on maternal health through a planned maternal risk program to support over 15,000 births annually.

ChristianaCare president and CEO Dr. Janice E. Nevin stated, “At a time of great uncertainty in health care, ChristianaCare and Virtua Health have the foresight and courage to explore what is possible.”

The partnership will also emphasize long-term workforce sustainability through academic programs. It currently supports more than 500 residents and fellows across both organizations.

George N. Foutrakis, chair of the ChristianaCare Health System Board, expressed support for the proposed venture, noting, “Our vision for this new health system – when Medicare and Medicaid are facing cuts and many hospitals are struggling to stay open – gives me hope and excitement for our future and the health of our neighbors.”

Virtua Health Board of Trustees chair Edward Cloues said that initial assessments suggest the organizations “could collectively enhance our capabilities and strengthen our outreach to the communities who depend on us.”

Both systems will now begin a due diligence process. During this phase, operations and patient care services will continue as usual.
