The formal understanding could help streamline the delivery of healthcare benefits, improve coordination, and expand coverage under nationally funded programmes.

The Union Health Ministry and the West Bengal Government are likely to formalise an MoU on June 8 to implement Central Health Schemes, including Ayushman Bharat, and expand healthcare access across the state.

The development follows ongoing discussions between the Centre and the state on expanding healthcare programmes and strengthening public health delivery systems in West Bengal.

A formal understanding between the Union Health Ministry and the West Bengal Government could help streamline the delivery of healthcare benefits, improve coordination, and expand coverage under nationally funded programmes.

The anticipated agreement comes shortly after West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a series of healthcare initiatives during the virtual inauguration of a new 100-bed ward at Kolkata's SSKM Hospital.

"We are going to implement the National Health Mission. We are bringing 1 crore 36 lakh families under Ayushman Bharat. We will recruit more doctors, nurses, technical and non-technical staff," he said.

Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare is expected to visit West Bengal on June 6 as part of discussions related to the implementation of Central Health Schemes.

The visit is likely to focus on operational planning and coordination ahead of the proposed MoU signing.

The expected agreement is particularly significant because West Bengal has not fully participated in several major Central Health Schemes in recent years.
