Unifeeder, PlanatEarth Launch Hybrid Marine Ambulance in Kerala

The project aims to improve healthcare access across the 14 islands, which cover 12.92 sq km.
In a significant step toward improving rural healthcare access, Unifeeder, a DP World company, has partnered with Kerala-based NGO PlanatEarth to launch a hybrid Marine Ambulance and Dispensary service for the island communities of Kadamakkudy Panchayath in the Vypin Constituency of Ernakulam District.
The initiative will benefit more than 17,000 residents across 14 remote islands with limited road access.
Operating six days a week, the specially designed medical boat will travel through local waterways to deliver outpatient consultations, emergency medical services, and essential medicines directly to the islanders.
“This Marine Ambulance and Dispensary reflects our commitment to the welfare of the communities in which we operate. We’re proud to partner with PlanatEarth to ensure that the people of Kadamakkudy’s island communities can access timely and life-saving healthcare, right at their doorstep,” said C.M. Muraleedharan, Regional Director, Unifeeder India.
The vessel is powered by a 40HP hybrid electric and solar engine. It includes a consultation room, a laboratory, and a mobile pharmacy. It also has essential medical infrastructure such as a defibrillator, suction unit, and oxygen supply.
“At Unifeeder, we believe connectivity goes beyond cargo – it’s about connecting communities to opportunity and care. This initiative exemplifies that belief,” said Kisna Yadav, Chief Legal Officer, Unifeeder.
A four-member medical team consisting of a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, and attendant will operate onboard. The service will adhere to a fixed weekly schedule for each island and can be reached through a dedicated helpline.
The project supports the objectives of the Government of India’s National Rural Health Mission, which seeks to improve healthcare access for rural populations, particularly in underserved and remote areas.
