President-elect Donald Trump has announced Dr Jay Bhattacharya, a Stanford University health expert of Indian origin, as the next Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The NIH, USA’s primary public funder of medical research, operates with an annual budget of $47.3 billion.
Announcing the appointment, Trump said, "I am thrilled to nominate Jay Bhattacharya, MD, PhD, to serve as Director of the National Institutes of Health. Dr Bhattacharya will work in cooperation with Robert F Kennedy Jr to direct the Nation's Medical Research and to make important discoveries that will improve health and save lives."
Dr Bhattacharya will collaborate with Robert F Kennedy Jr, recently nominated as Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Together, they plan to address pressing health challenges, including chronic illnesses and systemic inefficiencies in the country’s healthcare research and delivery.
Talking about the partnership between Bhattacharya and Kennedy Trump, stated that together they would restore NIH as a leader in medical research while addressing the root causes of chronic illnesses and diseases. "Together, they will work hard to Make America Healthy Again," Trump added.
Trump emphasized the importance of this partnership, describing it as a step toward “transforming the nation’s health policy and research approach.”
Dr Bhattacharya, a dual expert in medicine and economics, is a professor at Stanford University and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He also leads the Center for Demography and Economics of Health and Aging at Stanford.
