Tripura Seeks AIIMS Delhi’s Support to Strengthen Healthcare, Medical Education

Key issues discussed during the meeting included the current condition of healthcare institutions, infrastructure gaps, progress made over the past two decades, and public expectations.
The Tripura government has sought collaboration with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, to upgrade healthcare facilities, medical education, and research in the state.
A four-member delegation from AIIMS, led by its director Sriniwas, arrived in Agartala on Saturday and met with Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the health portfolio. The meeting focused on strengthening services and academic excellence at the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and the GBP Hospital.
Key issues discussed during the meeting included the current condition of healthcare institutions, infrastructure gaps, progress made over the past two decades, and public expectations. The AIIMS team is scheduled to continue its visit over the next few days, inspecting various departments and interacting with medical professionals to assess institutional requirements.
“The collaboration aims to boost public healthcare services and enhance medical education at AGMC, which collectively serve nearly 40 lakh people in the state,” said Tripura health secretary Kiran Gitte.
The initiative aligns with a central government directive encouraging AIIMS to assist in the development of state-run medical colleges and hospitals nationwide.
“From increasing the number of doctors and expanding undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats to upgrading medical equipment, introducing super-specialty services, and modernising diagnostic and hospital management systems,” Gitte said.
He further noted, “Their findings and recommendations will form the foundation of the MoU. Once the MoU is finalised, the implementation of the collaborative roadmap is expected to begin within the next six months.”
