Telangana & South Africa Eyes Deeper  Ties in Healthcare, Pharma & Medical Tourism

Both sides explored opportunities to expand collaboration in pharma, medical tourism, and skilled workforce development while strengthening investment links between India and South Africa.

Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy has recently conducted a bilateral meeting with the South African delegation led by Deputy President Paul Mashatile in Hyderabad.

During the meeting, accompanied by IT and Industries Minister D Sridhar Babu and Health Minister C Damodar Rajanarsimha, both delegations explored opportunities to expand collaboration in pharma, medical tourism, and skilled workforce development while strengthening investment links between India and South Africa.

Highlighting Hyderabad’s growing education and skillforce ecosystem, CM Reddy stated, “Hyderabad's robust educational and skill training ecosystem is serving as a backbone for creating a knowledge hub and a premier hub for engineering talent across IT, Pharma, Defence, and Aerospace sectors. The city is already placed as one of the leading global destinations for setting up of Global Capability Centers (GCCs) of Fortune-500 companies.”

The discussion also focused on healthcare and medical tourism. The CM noted that Hyderabad’s world-class medical and healthcare facilities have attracted a huge number of people from various countries, including the Middle East, to avail cost-effective specialized medical treatments.

In addition, he emphasized that the government is working on further strengthening Hyderabad's position as a global hub for skilled workforce and medical tourism.

CM Reddy also briefed the delegation on plans to build Bharat Future City, a net-zero, global standard, greenfield infrastructure located close to the international airport.

Further, IT & Industries Minister D. Sridhar Babu invited South African industrialists to further explore opportunities and engage in dialogue for cooperation.

Alongside him, Health, Medical & Family Welfare, Science and Technology, C. Damodar Raja Narsimha also highlighted Hyderabad’s pharm and healthcare ecosystem, stating that “ Hyderabad is globally known for the massive production of bulk drugs and vaccines. Our government is building mega hospitals in Hyderabad to cater to the healthcare needs of our people.”

Furthermore, Deputy President of South Africa, Paul Mashatile, also expressed South Africa’s interest in establishing Indian Pharma companies in South Africa and the potential investments.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy President said, “Universal access to healthcare is a priority for South Africa, and access to affordable medicines is a primary area of focus. The manufacture of affordable pharmaceuticals in the country is important to achieve this goal.”

He further added, “South Africa and India share a long history of experiences and cultural ties. However, establishing pharmaceutical companies and investments in South Africa provides a platform from which Indian companies can enjoy preferential market access into the rest of Africa through the African Continental Free Trade Area.”
