Telangana Plans to Double Health Spending to 8% of GSDP By 2047
Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha said the goal aligns with high-performing global economies and is closely tied to productivity, economic growth and societal resilience.
Telangana has set a long-term target to double its health expenditure from the current 4% of the State’s GSDP to 8% by 2047.
Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha said the goal aligns with high-performing global economies and is closely tied to productivity, economic growth and societal resilience.
He said healthcare access in the State is being widened through a strengthened three-tier structure. “Telangana has established 5,023 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs) offering services that include maternal care, screening for non-communicable diseases and mental health support,” he said, listing ongoing expansions.
A network of 184 Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP) hospitals continues to function as a referral pathway for specialised care.
The Minister said the tertiary care system is undergoing major expansion, with 35 teaching hospitals now present across districts and 13 speciality institutions in development.
Key projects include the new 2,000-bed Osmania General Hospital, modernisation of Gandhi Hospital, the ₹1,698 crore expansion of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences with 2,020 additional beds, and upgrades at MNJ Cancer Institute and the Institute of Mental Health, Erragadda.
He added that the State is drawing more than one lakh medical tourists each year under its Medical Tourism Policy, contributing to its emergence as an international healthcare hub.
According to him, equity initiatives for women, children, adolescents, senior citizens and vulnerable groups remain a priority.
Telangana continues to maintain full institutional deliveries and supports maternal and child health through nutrition kits, biosensor monitoring for high-risk pregnancies, kangaroo mother care and adolescent health services.
