Maxivision to Invest INR 400 Cr in Tamil Nadu Eye Care Expansion
The move marks the group’s official entry into the city, where it plans to establish a network of 10 super-specialty eye hospitals and vision centers.
Maxivision Super Speciality Eye Hospitals will invest INR 400 crore in Tamil Nadu over the next 2–3 years, with INR 100 crore dedicated to setting up hospitals in Chennai.
The move marks the group’s official entry into the city, where it plans to establish a network of 10 super-specialty eye hospitals and vision centers.
The healthcare group, founded in 1996 by Dr. Kasu Prasad Reddy and acquired by Dr. GSK Velu in 2011, raised INR 1,300 crore from private equity firm Quadria Capital in 2023. It is now aiming for an initial public offering (IPO) in 2027.
"In terms of revenue, we are number 3 and in terms of profits, we are the number 2 eye hospital chain in the country,” said Dr. GSK Velu, Chairman and Managing Director of Maxivision. “For a city like Chennai, just one hospital will not be impactful. So we were waiting for adequate funding to cover Chennai city well with our network,” he added, noting that the company’s current revenue is around INR 700 crore.
Maxivision already operates hospitals in Trichy, Madurai, Salem, Tanjore, Kumbakonam, and Perambalur. With the new investment, the group plans to launch 25–30 vision centers and 7–8 hospitals in Chennai this year. It also aims to expand into all districts and towns across Tamil Nadu.
“With state-of-the-art technology and a strong focus on early diagnosis and preventive care, we aim to reduce the region’s long-term disease burden and establish Tamil Nadu as a hub for clinical excellence and ophthalmic skill development,” said Dr. Shibu Varkey, Regional Medical Director, Maxivision Tamil Nadu.
Currently, the network includes over 65 hospitals and 30 vision centers. By the end of the fiscal year, Maxivision plans to reach 100 hospitals and 100 vision centers across India, mainly through greenfield projects.
“We will also start several academic initiatives to train Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, Counsellors & Paramedical professionals as part of CSR initiatives across Tamil Nadu,” said Prof. Dr. B Ganesh, Clinical & Academic Director, Maxivision Eye Hospitals.
