Maimonides Health to Merge With NYC Health + Hospitals, City Confirms

The transaction is supported by a $2.2 billion state grant, which officials said is intended to protect and strengthen healthcare access in Brooklyn.

Maimonides Health is set to merge with NYC Health + Hospitals and become part of New York City’s public healthcare system, city officials and the Brooklyn-based provider announced on Monday. The merger remains subject to final legal and regulatory approvals.

The transaction is supported by a $2.2 billion state grant, which officials said is intended to protect and strengthen healthcare access in Brooklyn. Once completed, Maimonides’ three hospitals and approximately 80 community-based outpatient sites will be integrated into the city-run health system.

According to the announcement, the merger will allow Maimonides facilities to receive higher Medicaid reimbursement rates through NYC Health + Hospitals, a change expected to provide long-term financial support for safety-net services. Medicaid is a key payer for patients served by both systems.

In addition, Maimonides patients will gain access to Epic, the electronic health record platform used across NYC Health + Hospitals. Officials said the integration will allow patients to view and manage their health records through a unified portal and enable better coordination among physicians across the system.

Maimonides Health Chief Executive Officer Ken Gibbs said the merger is still pending approval and emphasized that patient care will continue without disruption during the transition period.

“All of our 11 hospitals have their own identity and culture, and Maimonides will retain its unique character and commitment to the communities it serves,” said NYC Health + Hospitals President and CEO Dr. Mitchell Katz, adding that the system will work with Maimonides clinicians and staff to manage the transition.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said the merger would preserve access to care for Brooklyn residents who rely on Maimonides’ hospitals and outpatient facilities. He highlighted the scale of NYC Health + Hospitals, which operates 11 hospitals and numerous patient care sites across the city.

City officials also confirmed that Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, shortly before the merger announcement, renominated Dr. Katz to continue overseeing NYC Health + Hospitals. Mamdani also reappointed Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Jason K. Graham, according to the city.

Officials reiterated that services at Maimonides facilities will remain operational throughout the approval and integration process.
