MAHE & BPL Medical Technologies Ink Strategic Deal to Boost MedTech Innovation

The strategic aims are to create a talent pool equipped to meet the rising demands of the MedTech sector and strengthen India’s ‘Make in India’ healthcare mission.
In a decisive push to strengthen India’s medical device ecosystem, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) and BPL Medical Technologies have forged a strategic partnership to accelerate innovation and enhance industry-academia collaboration in healthcare technology.
Signed under MAHE’s “Year of Excellence in Industry-Academia Collaboration” initiative, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) combines academic research prowess with BPL’s industrial expertise to co-develop clinically validated, cost-effective medical devices for domestic and international markets.
The strategic tie-up will enable joint research, academic collaborations, exchange programs, and internship opportunities, creating a talent pool equipped to meet the rising demands of the MedTech sector and strengthening India’s ‘Make in India’ healthcare mission.
Sharing his perspective on the industry impact, Mr Guruswamy Krishnamurthy, CEO of BPL Medical Technologies, remarked, “Industry-academia partnerships drive innovation globally, and this collaboration marks a pivotal shift for BPL from trading to product development and manufacturing. Leveraging MAHE’s world-class testing facilities and clinical expertise will accelerate our journey to deliver practical, affordable medical devices for India and similar markets across the world.”
Dr Giridhar P Kini, Registrarof MAHE, and Mr Guruswamy Krishnamurthy, CEO of BPL Medical Technologies, officially exchanged the MoU. Key dignitaries, including Dr Ranjan R Pai, President of MAHE and Chairman of Manipal Education and Medical Group, Dr H S Ballal, Pro-Chancellor, Lt Gen (Dr) M D Venkatesh, VSM (Retd.), Vice Chancellor, and senior leadership from both institutions, attended the signing ceremony.
“This collaboration represents a significant step towards bridging the gap between academia and industry,” said Dr H S Ballal, Pro-Chancellor, MAHE.
“By combining our research capabilities with BPL’s industrial expertise, we can develop healthcare solutions that are not only innovative but also affordable for rural populations,” he added.
Sharing thoughts, Lt Gen (Dr) Venkatesh, Vice Chancellor, MAHE, said, “Our institutions share a common vision of advancing healthcare technology. This partnership will provide our students and researchers with valuable real-world exposure while contributing to meaningful healthcare innovations.”
A key highlight of the event was the presentation of MAHE’s Medical Instruments, Devices & Allied Services (MIDAS) hub by Dr Arun Maiya, Dean, Manipal College of Health Professions. Supported by the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, MIDAS is India’s first medical device innovation hub within a private university setup, connecting 25 institutions and 30 industry partners to drive indigenous design, development, and commercialization of healthcare devices. The initiative aims to reduce dependency on imports while delivering affordable, high-quality healthcare solutions across the country.
