KKR-Backed Baby Memorial Hospital to Acquire Star Hospitals in INR 1,800 Cr Deal

KKR-Backed Baby Memorial Hospital to Acquire Star Hospitals in INR 1,800 Cr Deal

The acquisition is being executed through its parent entity, Unimed Healthcare, with nearly 60% ownership transferring to Baby Memorial Hospital.

Kerala-based Baby Memorial Hospital has agreed to acquire a controlling 60% stake in Hyderabad’s Star Hospitals for INR 1,800 Cr, valuing the company at around INR 3,000 Cr, strengthening its footprint in southern India.

Star Hospitals, founded by Gopichand Mannam, operates key facilities in Banjara Hills and Nanakramguda and has built a strong presence in tertiary care, while Baby Memorial Hospital, established in 1987 by Dr K.G. Alexander, is a leading 500+ bedded multi-speciality tertiary care hospital, known for advanced technology in oncology and robotics.

The acquisition is being executed through its parent entity, Unimed Healthcare, with nearly 60% ownership transferring to Baby Memorial Hospital. The deal has already received clearance from the Competition Commission of India, and final formalities are underway.

This transaction follows KKR’s earlier investment in Baby Memorial Hospital in July 2024, where it acquired a controlling stake for approximately INR 2,500 Cr. Since then, it has been used to drive both organic and inorganic growth, including the acquisition of Meitra Hospitals for INR 1,200 Cr.

The group is also developing a greenfield hospital in Chennai and planning further expansion across Kerala, indicating a clear regional consolidation strategy.

KKR’s approach mirrors its earlier playbook in India’s healthcare sector, particularly with Max Healthcare, where it facilitated consolidation and scale before exiting at significant returns. The current strategy aims to build a large, integrated hospital network that could eventually be positioned for a merger or public listing.

While the deal strengthens Baby Memorial Hospital’s presence, integration will be a critical next step. Aligning clinical operations, maintaining service quality, and achieving operational efficiencies across geographies will determine the long-term success of the platform.
