Providence Names Kevin Smith as New CFO Amid Financial Turnaround

Smith currently serves as CFO of St. Louis-based SSM Health, a position he has held since 2023. In his new role at Providence, he will oversee the health system’s operational strategy and financial performance.

Providence has appointed Kevin Smith as its new chief financial officer, effective Oct. 26, as the nonprofit health system continues efforts to improve its financial performance. Smith will succeed Greg Hoffman, who retired in June after nearly a decade with the organization.

Smith currently serves as CFO of St. Louis-based SSM Health, a position he has held since 2023. In his new role at Providence, he will oversee the health system’s operational strategy and financial performance.

Providence operates 51 hospitals across the western US. The health system has faced financial pressure in recent years following the COVID-19 pandemic, with staffing shortages and higher supply costs contributing to losses over the past four fiscal years.

The organization has recently reported improvement in its financial position. During the first six months of its 2026 fiscal year, Providence reported a $400 million year-over-year improvement in operating income.

S&P Global Ratings upgraded Providence’s credit outlook in May, while noting concerns about the health system’s “thin balance sheet.”

Hoffman has served as Providence’s CFO since 2021, following several other roles within the nonprofit health system.

Before joining SSM Health, Smith held finance leadership positions at Universal Health Services, Lehigh Valley Health Network, Luminis Health and the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

Providence CEO Erik Wexler said Smith’s experience in improving financial and operational performance would support the health system’s ongoing efforts.

“His experience, judgment, and commitment to Mission-driven stewardship will be invaluable as we continue strengthening Providence for the future,” Wexler said.
