The current trauma center at KGMU, which was established in 2003, has 470 beds. The new expansion aims to cater to the growing demand for specialized trauma care in the state.

King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow is set to enhance its healthcare infrastructure with the establishment of a 20-bed pediatric trauma center, a comprehensive diagnostic unit, and facilities for patient attendants, including accommodation and a cooking area.

These additions will be located in front of the existing trauma center.

The announcement was made by Vice-Chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand during the first foundation day celebration of the Paediatric Orthopaedics Department.

She emphasized that the new facilities will significantly reduce patient congestion and improve the quality of care.

Two New Trauma Facilities Approved

The Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has also approved the construction of two new trauma-related buildings: a 500-bed second trauma center and another trauma facility integrated with a comprehensive diagnostic unit.

Cabinet Minister Suresh Khanna confirmed that INR 273 Cr will be allocated for the project.

The current trauma center at KGMU, which was established in 2003, has 470 beds. The new expansion aims to cater to the growing demand for specialized trauma care in the state.

The upcoming facilities will provide critical services from multiple medical departments, including, Trauma Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, and Critical Care Medicine.

These services will be delivered through modular hybrid operation centers.

Additionally, a comprehensive pathological and radiological setup will be established, offering MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, and other diagnostic services to ensure quicker and more efficient treatment.

The patient utility complex will include a dedicated disaster management ward designed to handle patients affected by large-scale emergencies.

Focus on Paediatric Orthopaedic Care

The pediatric trauma center will feature two specialized operation theatres for treating pediatric injuries and conditions.

Prof Ajai Singh, Director of AIIMS Bhopal and founding head of KGMU’s pediatric orthopedics department, highlighted the importance of such a dedicated center.

He recalled his efforts since 2016 to establish specialized care for conditions like cerebral palsy, clubfoot, limb deformities, scoliosis, and pediatric fractures. “It is the first in Uttar Pradesh to provide such specialized services,” he noted.

Prof Kumar Shantanu from KGMU’s orthopedics department announced that three orthopedic departments, including the super specialty orthopedics department, will be relocated to the new trauma facility within a month.

The center, inaugurated last month, will offer 240 beds, including 26 ICU beds, eight modular operation theatres, and eight outpatient departments (OPDs).

It will house specialized units for orthopedic surgery, pediatric orthopedics, sports medicine, and emergency services.
