Karnataka Clears 450-Bed High-Tech Hospital on RGUHS Campus in Ramanagara
The project, estimated at INR 150 Cr, has been positioned as a key step toward integrating medical education with hands-on clinical services while responding to local healthcare demands.
The Karnataka government has approved plans to establish a 450-bed high-tech hospital on the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) campus in Ramanagara, aiming to strengthen clinical training infrastructure and expand access to secondary and tertiary care in the district.
The project, estimated at INR 150 Cr, has been positioned as a key step toward integrating medical education with hands-on clinical services while responding to local healthcare demands.
The new campus of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences near Archakara Halli has already been under construction at an estimated cost of INR 600 Cr. The expansion follows provisions outlined in the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences Act, 1994, later amended in 2007, which originally envisioned a comprehensive academic health complex.
The blueprint included medical, dental, pharmacy and nursing colleges, alongside a 250-bed super-speciality facility and a 750-bed high-tech hospital.
Although the administrative block and medical college buildings are currently under development, the hospital component has not been part of the initial construction phase.
Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil confirmed that the hospital is now being taken up as part of the second phase. “Officials have been instructed to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the construction of a 450-bed high-tech hospital during the second phase of work at the new RGUHS campus,” he said.
The decision comes amid concerns raised about the absence of an attached teaching hospital, which is mandatory for recognition by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
C.N. Manjunath, Member of Parliament from Bengaluru Rural, has sought clarification from the university administration. In a letter, he noted, “It is learnt that, at present, only the administrative block and medical college buildings are under construction at an approximate cost of INR 600 Cr, fully funded by the university. The establishment of a fully functional 650-bed hospital is, however, an indispensable requirement for any medical college, both from an academic and public healthcare perspective, as well as for convenience and for National Medical Commission (NMC) recognition.”
The Karnataka government has also applied to the National Medical Commission to establish a new medical college in Ramanagara. If approved, the 450-bed hospital will serve as a foundational teaching and referral centre, reinforcing the state’s medical education ecosystem.
