The expansion is part of its broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the Indian healthcare sector.
Malaysian healthcare giant IHH Healthcare has announced plans to expand its India operations by adding around 2,000 new hospital beds by 2028.
The expansion is part of its broader strategy to strengthen its presence in the Indian healthcare sector.
While unveiling its new brand identity, IHH Healthcare stated, “Fortis Healthcare and Gleneagles Healthcare India's collaboration is driving stronger business performance and sustainable growth. IHH is harnessing operational and financial efficiencies to power its ambitious plan of adding around 2,000 new beds in India by 2028.”
Currently, IHH Healthcare operates 5,000 beds across 35 hospitals in 11 Indian states. Fortis Healthcare, part of IHH’s portfolio, recently entered a collaboration with Ekana Group to manage a 550-bedded greenfield super specialty hospital near Gomti Nagar, Lucknow. This move is expected to further enhance the group’s operational footprint and patient care capacity in the region.
Expansion Through Partnerships and Brand Integration
The group’s expansion strategy leverages collaborations and operational efficiencies. By aligning Fortis and Gleneagles Healthcare under IHH’s management framework, the company aims to streamline services and improve hospital capacity. The partnership with Ekana Group for Lucknow’s hospital reflects IHH’s approach of combining local expertise with corporate oversight to optimize healthcare delivery.
IHH Healthcare also operates internationally in Turkey, Singapore, and other North Asian countries under various brands, including Island, Mount Elizabeth, Pantai, Parkway, and Prince Court, highlighting its global operational experience.
Role of Private Healthcare Providers in System Efficiency
Speaking about IHH’s brand update and broader role in healthcare, Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Dr Haji Dzulkefly Ahmad, Health Minister of Malaysia, said, “Private providers like IHH do more than deliver care. They create jobs, drive investment, spur innovation, along with easing congestion in our public system by absorbing patient volumes, offering specialist services, and reducing waiting times for patients who seek faster access to care.”
The announcement marks a significant step in scaling private healthcare infrastructure in India, focusing on expanding capacity in corporate hospital chains while maintaining operational efficiency and service quality.
